Tree species

Moringa “Malungay” [Moringa oleifera]

Why this species was chosen

We chose this species because it has potential to improve nutrition, boost food security and support sustainable landcare. It had been used to combat malnutrition especially among infants and nursing mothers. This tree is very easy to plant and propagate. Here in the Philippines we can just plant it in our backyards. Some areas consider this tree as “tree of life” most especially in the rural areas. The leaves and seed pods are very nutritious and are widely used as traditional medicines and supplement for lactating mothers. It thrives during dry season, when most plants are typically wilting and becoming scarce.

Our story

OISCA Manila Office has been participating with the Green Wave Campaign for 3 years now. It helps us to be more aware of what we can do for our environment. The Rambutan tree that was planted 3 years ago has been growing well and hopefully will bear fruit after 2 or 3 years from now. For this year's campaign, we planted Malunggay (Moringa oleifera). The leaves of malungay trees will be a source of food and will be shared with the neighbors. The matured seed pods taken from the mother plant will be dried and the seeds will be planted next month. We enjoyed participating in the Green Wave Campaign and we are looking forward to our next activity. OISCA Manila also coordinates with other OISCA CFP offices in the Philippines. This year, we started an initiative to introduce The Green Wave Campaign to schools that are not supported by Our Organization.
