Why this species was chosen
The Northern Red Oak is a native species in Canada. Specimens of this species currently grow along the shoreline in nearby Lasalle Park, Burlington, Ontario.
The trees planted at CCIW on May 22 2209 have been raised from acorns which were collected from the largest and oldest of Lasalle Park's Northern Red Oaks.
The trees have been generously contributed by the Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan, a local multi-stakeholder group involved in improving Great Lakes water quality.
Because these specimens are genetically adapted to local conditions, they are particularly appropriate native species for this restoration project and the Green Wave in 2009.
