With a (new) deadline of 31 July 2011, entries are invited from children and young people to the 2011 YUNGA International Drawing Competition on the theme of Forests. The competition is linked to the 2011 International Year of Forests. The drawing should reflect issues concerning forests and why they are important to our world. It could depict everyday actions that contribute to conserve these important wonders. Any type of drawing material can be used with the exception of crayons – for example pens, pencils, paints or even computer graphic programmes. Participants are encouraged to use bright bold colours.
Judging will be in three age categories: 6-10 years, 11-15 years and 16-20 years. There’ll be an overall winner, as well as winners and runners-up for each of the age categories and n addition, the drawings submitted may be used in logos, posters, publications, T shirts and activity badges. For example, entries to the 2010 competition have been used in the Biodiversity Challenge Badge and for the logo of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2011 – see the 2010 winners.
The competition is organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Secretariat of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and is being held as a part of a youth education initiative intended to enhance awareness on the importance of forests among children and young people and to provide them with knowledge that can help them to become active agents of change in our society.
